Top Tips for Staying Safe While Running
- Plan your route.
You can map out your run easily on apps like Strava or Komoot. They also help you track your speed and the distance of the route.
- Wear high-vis running gear.
If your route has road crossing segments or you run at night, ensure your clothing has reflective panels.
- Avoid running at night.
It’s much safer to run during the day when it’s light. However, if you prefer to run at night, why not try a running group?
- Join a running group!
A great way to make new friends, be part of a motivational community and stay safe. Running groups follow pre-planned routes and provide an added layer of safety whenever you exercise.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
If you can, wear open ear headphones or keep one headphone out. This will allow you to hear oncoming traffic, bikes and people around you.
- Let someone know your running route.
Let a friend, partner or family member know your running route and download a safety app like bsafe. With Bsafe, you can track your running route live via GPS and assign guardians who can check on you through the app.
- Make sure you stay hydrated.
You lose a lot of water on a run due to sweating. Carry a hydrating drink with you.
